How Often Should You Schedule Lawn Maintenance?

Weekly, bi-weekly, or as-needed? Here's how to match your service schedule to how your lawn actually grows.

One of the most common questions we get is some version of, "How often do I really need this?" The honest answer is: it depends on the time of year, the type of grass, and what you want the lawn to look like. Here's how we typically think about it.

Weekly service (the default for most homes)

From early April through late June, and again in September, Maryland lawns grow fast. Going more than seven days between cuts means you're removing too much blade at once, which stresses the grass and leaves clumps behind. Weekly service is the standard for anyone who wants a consistently sharp-looking yard.

Bi-weekly service

In the heat of July and August, and in the cooler shoulder weeks of fall, growth slows down. Many properties can safely shift to every-other-week without losing much in appearance. We also use bi-weekly schedules for smaller yards, shaded lots, and customers managing budget.

What "as-needed" actually looks like

We don't recommend a true on-call schedule for most properties — it almost always means cuts happen too late, the grass is too long, and the yard goes through visible peaks and valleys. The exceptions are vacation homes, rentals between tenants, and lots that simply don't grow (heavy shade or very poor soil).

What's actually included in a maintenance visit?

  • Mowing at the right height for the season (typically 3 to 3.5 inches).
  • Trimming around fences, trees, foundations, and obstacles.
  • Edging along driveways, walkways, and beds.
  • Blowing off all hardscape — driveway, walkways, porch, patio.
  • A visual check for issues: drainage spots, pest signs, broken irrigation.

How to choose your schedule

If your yard is your front-of-house, you live in an HOA, or you're prepping to sell, default to weekly. If the yard is mostly functional and budget matters more than perfection, a hybrid schedule — weekly in spring and fall, bi-weekly in mid-summer — is the most cost-effective option.

When we put together a quote, we'll recommend a schedule based on your actual lawn, not a generic package. You can always adjust it as the season goes on.
